Bay Area Diaries - Week 1

It has been a week since we moved to the Silicon Valley. We are living in the Residence Inn Marriott in Sunnyvale. It felt weird at first when we arrived, as the penthouse two-bedroom suite was nothing like what we had pictured in our minds while reserving it from our "mansion" in Hillsboro. It lacked the sheer space our kids are used to of playing in and roaming around while at the house. I kept missing the tall windows around the home and the greenery of the park and the backyard that my eyes were so used to seeing at every moment while being at home. Where have we come?? and why?? have been the constant questions in my brain.
Avi's first day in 2nd grade!!
Well, take it easy, it is still the settling up phase. You are in a hotel, so consider it your vacation. Enjoy good food that Bay Area has to offer. Amazing Indian restaurants, our first week, we ate at Chaat Bhavan (good food but fingers turned yellow and remained so even after washing with soap), Mirch Masala (nice tasty food), and even some pure veg restaurants like Thali (good Gujarati food) and Anand Bhavan (awesome south Indian pure veg food).
We celebrated Gaurav's birthday with some close friends eating dinner at Thali and eggless mango cake from Bay Area Hot Breads, our first party at Bay Area (I still throw surprise parties for him sometimes!! :)). Going to Jain temple on the birthday morning right after getting Avi's admission at school was a real blessing. Avi started his school at Don Callejon from Wednesday and appears to be getting into the routine, I know it is hard for him, he still missed Carden Cascade Academy and his friends at Hillsboro. But at least the new school is keeping him busy.
We drove to nearby parks in the evenings when we missed our Village at Orenco community park in Hillsboro. The Seven Seas park had big play structures and sand pits for kids, we all loved it. We went to Indian grocery store and started cooking in our hotel's little kitchenette. Having mom and dad with us is a real boon, they are a constant support to us and our kids alike.
The friends in Bay area are helping with all sorts of questions I have been coming up with. I am so grateful to have them here. I have started driving freely on the freeways, something I somehow did not know I could do. We went to San Fransico on our first weekend in Bay Area, what a luxury to see the great Golden Gate Bridge just in an hours drive!

The weather has been great, doesn't feel like Fall yet. Went to farmer's market and got some amazing fresh fruits and vegetables. Glad to hear that the farmers market happens year round over here. To top all that, saw over a thousand families doing Karwa Chauth pooja at Sunnyvale Hindu Temple, a scene I have never seen before in the US. Feels like we are living in the Indian city of United States. People are great. All in all, a good first week except some moments of anxieties about uncertainties of future place and many moments of acute nostalgia for our past life at Hillsboro.

Mantra: Keep the faith, focus on what needs to be done next, prioritize and live one day at a time.
